Science @ the Saunders is an exciting new event series hosted in MOSI’s state-of-the-art Saunders Planetarium. This ongoing program invites guests to explore the universe through captivating research talks, immersive star tours, and engaging Q&A sessions.

Designed to spark curiosity and celebrate the latest in astronomical research, Science @ the Saunders brings cutting-edge science to life in a way that’s exciting, interactive, and thought-provoking!

  Pathology: Behind the Scenes of a Diagnosis

Dr. Xiaoyin "Sara" Jiang, MD, FCAP

Dr. Xiaoyin “Sara” Jiang, MD, FCAP, is Professor of Pathology at the University of South Florida and Senior Staff Pathologist at Ruffolo, Hooper, and Associates. Her areas of expertise are cytopathology and surgical pathology of the head and neck and endocrine systems, thyroid molecular testing, ultrasound-guided FNA, and novel applications of social media for medical professionals. She has authored multiple book chapters as well as co-authoring the Survival Guide to Cytopathology. She has been honored with local and national awards for teaching, resident advocacy, and mentorship, and has lectured nationally and internationally on thyroid molecular testing, head and neck pathology, and novel uses of social media.

Get ready for hands-on science like you’ve never experienced before! In this exciting chemistry class, students will discover that chemistry is all about exploring, experimenting, and having fun while learning. They will investigate what happens when different compounds are combined and observe the surprising and sometimes colorful reactions that result. Students will also explore how chemists use these reactions to create and improve the everyday products we rely on. Through engaging experiments and discovery-based learning, they’ll think like real scientists in the lab!

Scouts will explore the value of civic responsibility, community service, and active citizenship while developing the knowledge and leadership skills needed to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond. Scouts will earn community service hours through volunteerism and citizen science activities at MOSI. The camp-in includes the Citizenship in the Community merit badge workshop, light snack, sleeping at MOSI, light breakfast, and MOSI Fun Patch for scouts. At least 1 adult chaperone required per 4 children.

Students will also be introduced to gel electrophoresis through simple, age-appropriate experimentation to see how DNA can be separated and analyzed. Along the way, they’ll discover how genetics shapes who we are and connects us to every living thing around us.

Each event challenges students to think like engineers—planning, building, testing, and improving their designs for the best possible results. With creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving, students will compete for gold in this action-packed STEM experience. Will you rise to the challenge and become a STEM Olympian?

Students will also explore energy transfer by creating kinetic art that keeps motion going. In addition, we’ll experiment with light and prisms to uncover how rainbows are formed and how light can be separated into a spectrum of color. Through interactive activities and creative exploration, students will think like physicists while having fun discovering how the universe really works.

Stomp, chomp, and explore the prehistoric world! Travel back in time to discover the incredible creatures that once roamed the Earth. In this action-packed session, students will dig into dinosaur science through fun, interactive activities. Along the way, explore concepts like habitats, adaptation, and how fossils are formed.
