Get ready to soar! Fantastic Fliers is a fun-filled, 2-hour hands-on science adventure where young learners explore the amazing world of flight. Designed especially for curious kids ages 5–7, this class combines creativity, discovery, and play to help children understand how things fly.

Take your learning to new heights in this exciting exploration of the science of flight! Students will discover how forces like lift, thrust, drag, and gravity work together to make things fly. Using this knowledge, they’ll design and build their own flying vehicles, then test them to see how high and how far they soar. Through hands-on experimentation and creative problem-solving, students will think like engineers and take flight in a fun and engaging way.

Scouts will explore the value of civic responsibility, community service, and active citizenship while developing the knowledge and leadership skills needed to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond. Scouts will earn community service hours through volunteerism and citizen science activities at MOSI. The camp-in includes the Citizenship in the Community merit badge workshop, light snack, sleeping at MOSI, light breakfast, and MOSI Fun Patch for scouts. At least 1 adult chaperone required per 4 children.

Students will also be introduced to gel electrophoresis through simple, age-appropriate experimentation to see how DNA can be separated and analyzed. Along the way, they’ll discover how genetics shapes who we are and connects us to every living thing around us.

Each event challenges students to think like engineers—planning, building, testing, and improving their designs for the best possible results. With creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving, students will compete for gold in this action-packed STEM experience. Will you rise to the challenge and become a STEM Olympian?

OVERNIGHT CAMP-IN

January 23rd from 7:00PM - January 24th at 9:00AM

Gaze into the night sky with telescopes, learn the stories behind the constellations in the Saunders Planetarium. The camp-in includes the Astronomy merit badge workshop, light snack, sleeping at MOSI, light breakfast, a MOSI Fun Patch for scouts, and general admission to MOSI after the event. At least 1 adult chaperone required per 4 children.

We’ve used programming to move virtual characters around a screen, but now you get the chance to use programming to control real robots in the physical world! Learn about motors, sensors, and more as you follow a blueprint to build a robot out of LEGO and then program it to follow your commands.

Treat your curiosity to something sweet! Sweet Science is a fun-filled, hands-on class where young learners explore the science behind their favorite sugary treats—perfect for the month of February. In this exciting session, students will experiment with candy and simple ingredients to discover fascinating science concepts. From making colorful candy reactions and exploring melting chocolate to testing how different sweets dissolve, kids will learn about chemistry, states of matter, and changes in materials in a deliciously fun way.

This class will bring a glide to your stride and a bounce to your step as we dive into the exciting world of physics! Students will explore the forces that shape our everyday lives through hands-on experiments and discovery-based learning. We’ll investigate gravity and learn what “Gs” are, experiencing how forces affect motion in fun and engaging ways. Students will also explore energy transfer by creating kinetic art that keeps motion going. In addition, we’ll experiment with light and prisms to uncover how rainbows are formed and how light can be separated into a spectrum of color. Through interactive activities and creative exploration, students will think like physicists while having fun discovering how the universe really works.

Stomp, chomp, and explore the prehistoric world! Travel back in time to discover the incredible creatures that once roamed the Earth. In this action-packed session, students will dig into dinosaur science through fun, interactive activities. Kids will create their own “fossils,” build and test dinosaur models, and learn how scientists study these ancient giants. Along the way, explore concepts like habitats, adaptation, and how fossils are formed.

What causes storms? Can lightning strike from both above and below? Why are tornadoes so powerful and destructive? Students will explore these questions and more in this exciting, hands-on weather class. Through engaging activities and experiments, learners will discover how different types of precipitation form, including rain, snow, sleet, and hail. They’ll also investigate why weather can vary so dramatically around the world—why it may be sunny in one location while another is experiencing freezing temperatures. By the end of the class, students will better understand the forces that shape our atmosphere and how meteorologists predict the ever-changing weather forecast. Get ready for a fun and fascinating journey into the science of storms!
