MISSION STATEMENT

MOSI's Mission and Vision

MOSI is the intersection of science, technology and innovation in the Tampa Bay region where conversations and learning happen, knowledge is exchanged and new ideas are celebrated.

Our Leadership

HISTORY

Our History

Over 60 years of Science and Innovation

Since its inception in 1962 as the Museum of Science and Natural History located in Sulphur Springs, MOSI has been a beacon of education and innovation. In 1980, it found a new home in North Tampa, fully emerging as the Museum of Science & Industry in 1982.

Over the years, MOSI has continually expanded, adding attractions like the Saunders Planetarium in 1988 and a groundbreaking 1993 expansion featuring the state’s only IMAX Dome Theatre. In 1996, the Back Woods Nature Trail and BioWorks Butterfly Garden brought the wonders of nature to our visitors.

The nexus of science, technology, and innovation in the Tampa Bay region

In 2001, the Gladys Shafran Kashdin Welcome Center transformed MOSI into the 5th largest science center in the United States. “Kid’s In Charge!” became the largest children’s science center in the country in 2005, while 2010 saw the addition of the thrilling Sky Trail Ropes Course.

In 2017, MOSI made strategic changes to ensure sustainability. Today, our mission is to be the nexus of science, technology, and innovation in the Tampa Bay region—where conversations flourish, learning thrives, knowledge is shared, and new ideas are celebrated.

In 2025, MOSI proudly unveiled the new Saunders Planetarium & Digital Dome Theatre, a state-of-the-art immersive experience unlike any other. As the largest planetarium in Florida and the second largest in the United States, it offers breathtaking journeys through space, science, and storytelling on an extraordinary scale.
