TAMPA, FL (March 18, 2025) – After two months of testing and configuration, MOSI, Tampa’s Museum of Science & Industry, has set the date to open its new Digital Dome Theatre. Starting April 1, 2025, guests will be surrounded by science inside MOSI’s eight-story-tall iconic blue dome as images wrap around them on a 10,000-square-foot curved screen.
New MOSI Digital Dome Theatre Will Wow 300+ Guests at a Time Beginning April 1
Erecting the massive metal NanoSeam screen took 13 weeks. Crews then installed 10 state-of-the-art Christie digital projectors in January. Over the following two months, workers added lighting, configured seating, and tested the cutting-edge DigiStar control system to officially bring America’s second-largest planetarium to Tampa Bay.
Starting April 1, several showtimes will be offered each day, with fascinating tours of the night sky presented by MOSI space experts and immersive 360-degree movies that take you to the edge of our solar system, beneath the surface of the sun, and inside wonders of the ancient world.
The day before it opens to the public, MOSI’s Digital Dome Theatre will host the first field trip for students from Hillsborough County Public Schools and a VIP grand opening event hosted by Clearwater native and astronaut Nicole Stott. Starting Tuesday, April 1, 2025, the theatre will be open for shows for MOSI guests. One show will be included with MOSI admission. Adding an additional show is just $5.
“We’ve set the date for a powerful moment for Tampa Bay. We cannot wait for hundreds of jaws to drop at once when they see how this multi-million-dollar effort has brought one of America’s top STEM learning experiences to our area,” said MOSI CEO John Graydon Smith.
MOSI’s Digital Dome Theatre is the new home of MOSI’s Saunders Planetarium. The new 8K image technology is far sharper, brighter, and more immersive than the old film technology that last operated inside the dome in 2017. A combination of foundation, private, and community support funded the upgrades.
