MANAGER OF PLANETARIUM & SPACE PROGRAMS
Education Department
Full-Time Position with Benefits
This position is responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of all Planetarium, Space, and Astronomy programs, which includes
developing, implementing and evaluating these programs and maintaining program facility and equipment.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Working Manager responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of planetarium, space, and astronomy programs which includes, but is not limited to, presenting, scheduling, staffing, training and monitoring quality and content of experiences for the Saunders Planetarium, the Challenger Learning Center, SkyWatch, and outreach programs including the Portable Planetarium and traveling telescopes. 
  • Presents programs on varied content, including but not limited to flight and space, astronomy, technology and industry; provides backup for programs across department divisions.
  • Responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of planetarium and challenger facilities. Troubleshoots and repairs space and astronomy equipment as needed; seeks maintenance support for complex repairs from internal contacts (exhibits/facilities departments) or through external contractors as needed.
  • Manages and supervises part-time educator staff and volunteers, including hiring, training, coaching, counseling, and scheduling.
  • Develops and implements a variety of programs for adults.
  • In collaboration with other department Directors and Managers, initiate new program ideas including guest lectures, group and public programs, partnerships and revenue sources.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    · 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in astronomy, physics, math or other MOSI-mission related field·         Previous experience in science center or similar informal education institution delivering programs in a planetarium setting·
  • Three years experience in a supervisory position
  • Experience operating and assembling telescopes.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple projects
    .
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with proven safe driving record, ability to operate large vehicles including electric carts and vans.
  • Able to stand up from 2-3 hours at a time.
  • Able to verbally project to large groups, indoors and out.
  • Able to lift heavy objects

     

    Custodian
    Facilities Department
    Part-time Position

    Weekend Availablity Required

    RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Sweeps and Mops Floors
  • Dusts, polishes furniture
  • Cleans restrooms and replaces supplies
  • Disposes of wastepaper and trash
  • Washes windows
  • Cleans exhibits
  • Moves furniture and equipment, delivers supplies and runs errands
  • Keeps outside premises and grounds in an orderly condition free of litter

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read and follow instructions and handle multiple tasks routinely.
  • Freqent walking, bending, stooping, squatting, and crouching.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of up to 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of use of chemical/cleaning agents preferred.
